Photoshop: Defining Brushes

This tutorial will teach you how to define, or make, brushes in Photoshop.

  1. Open up an image in Photoshop, I chose this one:
    Step 1
  2. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tools menu, it looks like this:
    Rectangular Marquee Tool
  3. Starting in the upper left hand corner of the image, click and drag down to the lower right hand corner of the image. Just make sure that what you want to make into a brush is enclosed in the box that you have created. This is what I have now, keeping in mind that the gray and black borders are just there to show you what it should look like being viewed in Photoshop:
    Step 3
  4. Now go to Edit on Photoshop’s menu, then scroll down and select Define Brush.
  5. Type in a name for the brush you have just created, then click OK.
  6. Your brush has now been added to Photoshop’s list of brushes!
