Spammish Comments

Other than the usual spam comments consisting of repeated forms of viagra, links and porn pasted over and over again, I’ve noticed some fringe comments that seem to border on spam but are obviously real people. I’m not sure how I feel about this — on one hand, I can tell they are legitimate comments but their links and names are usually spammy and not what I’d call typical at all. I’m happy that I get comments and that people care what I write but I get the gut feeling that they’re not necessarily commenting for that reason but instead to advertise their blog by hammering out comments at various sites to up their search engine rankings (hence the spammy names instead of a real name).

Some would say that I should just be happy that I’m getting comments but to be honest I just don’t care any more about that stuff. I’m a sophomore in college with a week until my final exams :P

I’m thinking I might decide to start deleting those types of comments — despite being legitimate discussion I feel like it makes the comments look spammish, which is bad. So please use your real names, spammish people.

hahaha I’m so sick of Viagra emails!
I’m only eighteen, I don’t need that crap for at least hopefully thirty years! xD

I used to get hardcore spam about all sorts of crazy things. I think casinos, as opposed to viagra or porn, were my big ones. I use Peter’s Custom Antispam plugin and I love it.

I understand where you’re coming from though. I’m more than happy to get comments but when people just comment and say “Hi. Nice layout!” and it doesn’t relate at all to the blog, I get a little flustered. I think you should delete any that you want.. it’s your blog :)

Hi ! Just stumbled upon your blog and decided to comment =

SPAM. How I hate it. You get so excited when you have lots of comments, and then you realize they’re just lame ads. Gr! lol

I’m having the same problems with spammish comments, I think they are trying to be smart; make the first one a decent comment, you approve it, and then all comments they make afterwards are automatically approved. <= smart, eh? I think I’ll follow your lead, if it looks spammish just delete!

I also am experiencing what your experiencing. they are just commenting for the sake of advertising their site or blog. hope they care more of the topic they are commenting to rather than concentrating on gathering people to visit their site.

there are some comments that just copy and paste what other people say. it’s really annoying cause you think it’s a real comment then you go, wait…someone else said that…

Well there are two choices from the way i see it: one is you get more comments albeit of lower general quality, or you get significantly less comments, while they are made by people genuinely interested in the subject. And since comment count does add to the image of a website, i say stop complaining and enjoy what you’ve got. Did that sound spammy? I hope not.

@Ramunas: Well I think you completely missed the point — it’s my blog, I can moderate comments how I please. I don’t really care about high comment counts and I don’t see how high comment counts “add to the image of a website”. If you’re rating websites based on the amount of comments the posts get then I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about how you rated my website anyway.

Haha. Well I can assure you that my comment is not spam or spammish! Good luck with college hon, I remember it was a really busy time for me as well and there was no way I could even think of having a website. Just had no time back then, I barely have time now ;-)

Aww I can’t stand spam, and yeah spammish comments must be really annoying. If I were you, I’d just treat them like spam. If they’re only doing it for advertising, why let them? Lol, but it’s your choice whether you want to keep them or not (:

And good luck with your exams!
